So, you are having a baby, a new life! Congratulations!
Pregnancy means many things to a multitude of moms and dads (to be). Many a time, pregnancy is very exciting but it can also be quite overwhelming and stressing you out.
In general, we all know that pregnancy is a life changing event and it is, more often than not, a beautiful time. So, why does it sometimes feel as if this is the hardest thing you have ever done? (Actually, wait until motherhood, that may turn out to be even harder)!
Pregnancy is a time (nine long months!) where the body and mind go through a lot of physical and emotional changes that are not always understood by you and your partner and/or people around you. So, in reality, you just have to suck it up!
To mention but a few of the physical and emotional changes, frequent urination, pelvic pain, insomnia, acne, headaches, fatigue, facial hair, back ache, leaking breasts, candida infections, morning sickness, swollen ankles, heartburn, and oh my… the mood swings! ?Since alcohol and drugs are off-limits, notably, having a sense of humour is often the only way to get through.
Be that as it may, let’s put things in perspective. Haven’t you longed for this pregnancy and this baby for great lengths of time? Yes! But, wow, it is so overwhelming and so incredibly exhausting! It feels like a roller-coaster with your hormones taking over, causing all these changes and, consequently, when you sneeze or laugh too hard, you may pee your pants (again)!
The reality is that often, you just don’t feel so good as pregnancy can bring about a lot of anxiety, especially with the first one when you have no clue from one day to another what will be in store for you. You are constantly wondering if you are going to cry all day or if your moods swing from one extreme to the other.
Recently, I read a quote which very much sums up what pregnancy can be all about: “Waiting for this baby is like picking someone up from the airport but you don’t know who they are or what time their flight comes in”! ??
While pregnancy isn’t always fun, sometimes, you just need a good laugh to get through the tougher times. When your belly is too big and you need to ask someone else to tie your shoelaces or when nothing fits you anymore and you need an entirely new wardrobe, try to stay positive and see the fun in this.
On the whole, pregnancy is wonderful but it is also hard work and it is really OK to admit this. There may be a time of confusion, fear, stress and maybe even some depression. Nonetheless, having said all this, what can you do to make your pregnancy less hard and more enjoyable? Well, firstly, try to get as much rest as you can (I know this is not always as easy as it sounds), take a nap, read a (funny) book, spend time with your partner and loved ones, see a movie, (continue) exercise, go for a lovely walk, have a relaxing massage and get peace of mind by following childbirth education classes. There are endless activities pregnant moms can engage in to make their pregnancies less hard and therefore more enjoyable.
By all means, please try to stay clear from Google in the event to try to understand your bodily aches and pains and your emotional outbursts as this may only make matters worse.
From my side, I hope this has been of some help to you and I would like you to embrace this new phase in your life and enjoy this exciting journey!
You can do this!
