The Motherhood Practice

Postnatal care · London

After day 10, the NHS goes quiet. Postpartum doesn't.

The NHS visits twice and discharges at day 10, just as the hardest weeks begin. We come to your home every week for six weeks, with one midwife who already knows you.

From £1,7008 visits over 6 weeks · London only · Alongside your NHS care

The service

What your midwife covers.

  • Feeding

Latch, supply, expressing, combination feeding, weaning. We offer practical, no-judgement help.

  • Your recovery

Perineal healing, c-section recovery, pelvic floor, bleeding. The questions you don't know how to ask the GP.

  • Your baby

Weight, jaundice, cord, reflexes, and a clinical eye on anything that might need a referral.

  • Your mind

Structured mental health screening at every visit. We catch the early signs and connect you to the right support before they become a crisis.

  • Your partner

Becoming a parent is overwhelming for both of you. We involve your partner in every visit, explaining what's happening, answering their questions, and giving them the confidence to be the support you need.

  • 7-day WhatsApp

A photo of a feed. A worry at 3am. A question that can't wait. Message us, get an answer from the midwife who knows you, not a helpline.

Week 6 · Included in your package

Postpartum MOT with a Women's Health Physiotherapist.

Before we step back, we want to know your body has been properly checked. Your package includes a session at Six Physio, with a women's health physio specialised in maternal recovery.

Testimonials

What our families say

  • In those first few weeks, I had countless questions, from whether certain noises she was making were normal, to how much to feed and bathe her. Having someone experienced to turn to was such a comfort.

  • Having my midwife visit the day I came home from hospital, and then again that same week, made all the difference. She supported me in all my feeding choices and gave me confidence to parent my way. Each of her visits allowed me to unload the crazy start of motherhood. I'm forever grateful for her support.

Choosing your support

Not sure which support you actually need?

If you're weighing up a doula, a night nurse, a sleep consultant, and now a midwife, here's the difference.

A midwife brings clinical knowledge none of the others can. She checks you and your baby at every visit, knows what's normal and what isn't, and escalates to the right people if something needs attention. She is trained in breastfeeding, can advise on sleep, and understands the full emotional landscape of the postpartum period, not as a listener, but as someone who has seen it hundreds of times and knows how to help.

Whatever you're going through in those first six weeks, she will have seen it before. And she'll know what to do.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked

Everything you need to know.

Can’t find what you’re looking for? See all FAQs or ask us directly.

  • What actually happens during a postnatal home visit?

Think of it as a clinical check-up wrapped in a warm conversation. For you, we check your physical healing, things like your blood pressure, uterine recovery, and any stitches or incisions. We also spend a lot of time talking about how you're really doing emotionally. For your baby, we do a top-to-toe check, monitor their weight, and look out for things like jaundice or cord healing. We also ensure your partner feels confident and supported during this big transition.

  • How is this different from the NHS midwife visits I get?

The NHS typically visits at Day 1, Day 5, and Day 10, then discharges you to the health visitor. We visit eight times over six weeks. Each visit is up to 90 minutes (compared to 20-30 minutes on the NHS), and you have direct WhatsApp access between visits. We also stay with you well past the NHS discharge point, because the postpartum period doesn't end at Day 10.

  • Is the timing of the visits set?

Our package includes 8 visits within the first 6 weeks. While we recommend a schedule of three visits in the first week (Day 1, 4, and 7) followed by weekly check-ins, we are entirely flexible. We tailor the timing to suit your recovery and your family's needs.

  • Is this instead of my NHS Health Visitor?

We work alongside the NHS teams, not instead of them. While your Health Visitor and NHS Midwife provide essential scheduled checks in the first few days, with home visits at Day 2 and Day 5 after birth, we visit weekly until six weeks. Because we see you frequently, we often catch the small things like a feeding tweak, a healing concern, or a dip in mood before they become bigger issues.

  • Do you offer a birth debrief?

We always start there. Our first visit is usually dedicated to sitting with you and hearing your birth story. We find that debriefing how the birth went, and offering a clinical midwife's perspective on those events, is an essential first step in your emotional recovery and your journey into parenthood.

  • Can you visit me at the hospital right after I give birth?

Yes, we certainly can. The hours immediately following birth can feel overwhelming. If your hospital allows private visitors, your midwife can come to your bedside to help with that very first latch, check on your initial recovery, and be a familiar, calm face to help you navigate the transition with your newborn.

  • I'm worried about feeding; can you actually assist?

Absolutely. Those first few days and weeks are a huge learning curve for both you and your baby. That's why our package includes up to three visits in that vital first week, whether that's in the hospital or at home. Having your midwife physically present to help with positioning makes all the difference. All our midwives are trained to support breastfeeding as well as other feeding methods, and we have a dedicated consultant should specific issues like mastitis arise. And if you choose to bottle-feed or use a combination, we provide expert guidance on that, too.

  • What if I'm bottle-feeding or combination feeding?

The same support, and no judgement. We help with paced bottle feeding, formula choice, and supply management for combination feeding. Whatever you have decided is right for your family, we are here to make it work.

  • Do you do mental health checks?

Every visit includes a structured wellbeing check. Because we see you so often, we can distinguish between the normal exhaustion of new parenthood and postnatal depression or anxiety. We use validated screening tools (including the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale) and provide a gentle, listening ear, and if needed, act as your advocate to the NHS to ensure you receive the specialist support you deserve. Please know that you are not alone, and you are certainly not failing.

  • What happens if my mood is very low?

Please know that you are not alone, and you are certainly not failing. The baby blues are common in the first few days, but when those feelings linger, you need a safe place to land. Because we see you so often, we can distinguish between the normal exhaustion of new parenthood and postnatal depression or anxiety. We provide a gentle, listening ear and, if needed, act as your advocate to the NHS to ensure you receive the specialist support you deserve. We also work with Mothering Minds, which means we can connect you with a private therapist within one to two days if you need more immediate support.

  • Can you help me if I've had a C-section?

Of course. Recovery from a caesarean is major abdominal surgery and requires specific care. We monitor your incision for signs of infection, help you find comfortable holding positions for the baby, and guide you on how to move safely as you heal. We're there to ensure your recovery is progressing exactly as it should so you can focus on bonding.

  • Is the postnatal package only for first-time mums?

Every mother deserves the best postpartum care, whether it's her first, second, or third baby. Every baby is different, and every recovery is a new journey. Second or third-time mothers often find our care even more valuable; it allows them a dedicated space to focus on this specific baby and their own recovery amidst the beautiful chaos of a growing family.

  • When can I start? My baby is already a few weeks old.

If you've already had your baby and feel you need extra support, please reach out. We may be able to offer a tailored package depending on the number of visits you need.

  • Can my partner attend the visits?

We actively encourage it. Partners often find it hard to know how best to support the mother while they are also adapting to a new role. We involve them in clinical checks, show them how to help with settling or bathing, and answer their questions too. We are caring for a new family unit, not just a mother and baby.

  • When should I book my postnatal package?

We recommend booking during your second or third trimester to ensure your midwife's availability around your due date. However, if you've already had your baby and feel you need extra support, please reach out. If we have the capacity, we will do our best to support you.

  • What if I need more than six weeks of support?

The postpartum period doesn't always wrap up neatly at six weeks. If you feel you need more visits to find your balance, we can easily extend your care. Your safety is our priority; if we are concerned for your health at any stage, we will discuss this with you and coordinate with the NHS to ensure you have the specialist support you need.

  • I had my baby outside London. Can you still help?

Yes, as long as you are back home in London for the visits. We come to your London address, where you gave birth does not affect your eligibility.
